The month of May is ending soon and while I enjoy every bit of this late spring season, I can't deny that hot humid summer days are just around the corner. To prepare for the hot season, I'm planning a list of cold beverages to fight the hotness of summer. And one of the best cold beverages here in Japan is the green tea smoothie. I love fruit shakes and smoothies but green tea gives a different twist. I'm not really a fan of super sweet shakes so the bitterness of green tea is a good accent to tone down any sweet desserts and drinks. It might taste a bit grassy to people who are not used to drinking green…

It's been a long time since I've been away from blogging!... After Golden Week here in Japan, things get back to the normal routine. The season slowly changed to summer and I've got my winter clothes washed and kept for the next cold season. I drink my warm beverages still during the early morning but as noon approaches, I love to indulge in cold drinks and desserts. As a coffee lover, I want to try all kinds of coffee and I think I should make a dessert with it. Luckily, I was able to declutter my cupboard and found leftover packets of gelatin powder with a recipe written on the small slip of paper. And I thought, wow I should…

I may be a little bit late writing about this blog but the spring we have in Japan right now is earlier than last year!  Sounds really cool as I looked forward to spring and witness the amazing flowers in bloom. Of course one of the main events to experience is hanami or cherry blossom viewing but it's not complete without food to enjoy. No worries though even if Tokyo has its cherry blossoms peak season last week, you can still enjoy last-minute hanami when the petals started to fall down and form a beautiful pink carpet on the ground. To give you ideas on what to bring to your picnic, I listed down five food groups to choose from…

Last Fall of 2022, I attended a school activity with my daughters where we made a pizza baked in a dutch oven. I haven't heard about this oven before but I learned that it's like a pot and lid filled with burning charcoal. So when you place the raw pizza inside, the heat from the charcoal is distributed equally, baking both the top and bottom of the pizza. It is easy to make that I'm sharing with you this magical recipe and most of the ingredients can be bought from the supermarket here in Japan. To make this blog even more interesting, a posted a video on the last part to have a glimpse of how we did it. INGREDIENTS …

In a few days, most people will celebrate Christmas and plan their food ahead of Christmas Eve dinner. Although Christmas is not widely celebrated in Japan, you can enjoy the season through its unique food and drinks. Interestingly, you will find a wide variety of sweets not known to your country, and trust me, they are mouthwatering and visually appealing! They are inspired by Western-style confectioneries with a Japanese twist. Not so sweet and most of all the texture is fluffy. Here are five popular Christmas desserts in Japan. 1. Strawberry Sponge Cake (Ichigo Shortcake) The most popular cake in Japan, this delectable dessert is made of vanilla-flavored sponge cake frosted with rare cream and topped with strawberries. The cake…

Spring is finally gone and officially, summer is just around the corner. It is not really hot yet, but gradually temperatures will soar in the next few weeks. Normally, most people prepare what to eat and do during the coming of the hot season. Think of frozen treats, summer foods, and a splash in the pool! I've rounded up five refreshing summer treats to try in Japan that absolutely beat the heat during the sweltering weather. Kakigori Kakigori is known as shaved ice, a traditional dessert that dates back to the Heian Period in Japanese history. During summer festivals, this beloved dessert is simply made with snow-like shaved ice flavored with various syrups. In cafes and restaurants, kakigori is more…

February is coming to an end and the unusually cold weather this month has brought misery to most people. The cold winds from the north were icy cold, making temperatures drop to sub-zero every morning and night. A large amount of snowfall especially in North Western Japan may be good for ski resorts but for ordinary day-to-day living, it could be very challenging. To cope with such cold temperatures, I share with you a winter recipe perfect for keeping the body warm and making the immune system strong. This recipe is called cream stew which is a popular Japanese dish served at home or in cafes. This dish originates from the West and is considered a "yoshoku" with a Japanese…

Chocolates are loved by people all over the world regardless of their customized flavors. Chocolate originated from Europe but was said to be introduced to Japan in 1797.
