BEST PLACES TO VIEW AUTUMN FOLIAGE IN JAPAN

Wanderlust

Autumn in Japan is one of the most spectacular sceneries in the world. The burst of colors from various species of maple and Japanese ginkgo trees created a mosaic of color against temples, shrines, parks, city streets, and lush countryside.

From Japan’s Northern prefectures down to the South, the autumn foliage views are amazing with different fall color vibrancy. They are nature’s work of art and add beauty to the cool and crisp autumn season.

If you are a tourist to Japan and wonder where’s the most popular spots to view autumn foliage, I narrowed down my choices to four spots that are quite popular and are flocked by tourists because of their picture-perfect views.

The iconic Mt. Fuji is on everybody’s bucket list in autumn. Wonder why it’s popular?  The surrounding areas give the volcanic mountain a postcard-perfect scene. The surrounding red and orange momiji leaves create a burst of vibrant colors. Tourists visiting this place are amazed by this spectacular sight. This is truly a worth-visiting place for autumn foliage viewing you shouldn’t miss.

Kyoto is also one of the best places to view autumn foliage in Japan. One of the famous spots for viewing is Eikando Zenrinji Temple which offers autumn leaves illumination, making it an incredible night viewing experience. It is held at night during the peak season every year. The breathtaking view of over 3,000 varieties of colorful maple tree leaves makes it a crowd drawer during autumn. The perfect period to visit this place is usually mid to late November.

MEIJI JINGU GAIEN, Tokyo

If you happened to be in Tokyo and don’t have the time or budget to explore the countryside for autumn foliage viewing, you don’t need to go further. Meiji Jingu Gaien is a popular spot for autumn leaves viewing in Central Tokyo. It is located in the Aoyama area and can be accessed easily from Roppongi, Harajuku, and Shibuya areas.
There are about 150 Gingko trees lined on this avenue for about 300m making the place absolutely gorgeous. During its peak and best viewing time in mid-November, some of the leaves fall down, creating a natural and beautiful golden carpet. Don’t miss visiting this glorious avenue during autumn.[/caption]

IROHAZAKA WINDING ROAD, Nikko, Tochigi

Breathtaking and a must-see spot especially if you’re a drone enthusiast. The beautiful autumn colors along Irohazaka can be enjoyed from late October to early November. During the season, the yellows and reds of ginkgo trees and Japanese maple trees are a sight to behold especially in the morning sunlight. Driving is more enjoyable at this time of the year.

Where to go autumn leaves viewing when you’re far away from touristy places.

Oosaki Shrine, Moka City, Tochigi, Japan
You can definitely enjoy autumn leaves viewing on a budget! When you don’t have the time and money to travel, just visit your local parks, shrines, and temples for an Instagram-worthy shot. Even government schools have their own Japanese maple trees and ginkgo trees planted. Take advantage to enjoy and savor this beautiful time of the year!
